This program provides an immersive experience for local high school sophomores and juniors to absorb valuable leadership skills, learn the importance of civic responsibility, and gain a strong understanding of the collaborative process.
Youth Leadership Wake Forest is similar in scope and content to the adult leadership program with one session per month for nine months from September to May. A robust curriculum, which emphasizes leadership training, is taught by skilled volunteer facilitators from the local business community. The program is designed to develop a motivated group of informed, committed and competent high schoolers who are driven to learn more about their community, assume leadership roles in their schools, and become increasingly involved in the town’s civic, cultural and economic development, as well as in local philanthropic and non-profit organizations.
The program, which is application-based, accepts 30 qualified students each year. The application process is open to students matriculating at Wake Forest High, Heritage High, Wakefield High and Franklin Academy; or residing in the 27587 zip code; or attending any other type of high school, including being home-schooled. Applicants must be in good academic standing, have no disciplinary or attendance problems at their respective schools, and meet a specific set of qualification criteria. A special committee is responsible for final applicant selection after reviewing all applications and ensuring there is a well-represented level of diversity among the chosen candidates.
By the end of each year’s program, the objective is for every participant to have:
Gained an awareness of the deep need for community service, civic participation and philanthropy;
Become increasingly familiar with other areas of Wake Forest beyond the immediate perimeters of their own schools and neighborhoods;
Interacted with adult leaders in the business, non-profit and public sectors; and
Forged a network comprised of adult and youth leaders in the Wake Forest area, which will act as an excellent foundation for future success in the college and business worlds.
Youth Leadership Wake Forest is tuition-free, and is wholly supported by sponsorships, donations and grants, which are tax-deductible.
Applications for the 2019-2020 session will be available beginning in January 2019.
