One of the Foundation cornerstones is the creation and implementation of workforce development initiatives for both youth and adults, where the emphasis is on people and expanding their horizons in the business world. Workforce development is critical to the economic stability and prosperity of a town or city or region, and Wake Forest is no exception.
Job Success 101-Work Skills Training and Job Fair The Foundation is committed to helping students understand and adopt the rules of basic business behavioral etiquette, enabling them to conduct themselves professionally in today's workforce environment.
To this end, the Foundation hosted a training workshop and jobs fair for area high school students in April 2018. Several local human resource professionals joined Wake Tech Community College educators to develop an appropriate curriculum and facilitate the workshop, which included an opening presentation by motivational speaker, Sean Ingram, of the Sean Ingram Academy in Raleigh.
The overall focus of the workshop was to familiarize students with the steps necessary to reach the interview stage, secure a job and retain it. Discussions centered on key job-seeking elements like resume writing and such make-or-break soft skills as being punctual, dressing appropriately and communicating effectively-which are critical for employment longevity. An added bonus was having HR representatives from such major area businesses as Chick-Fil-A, UNC Rex Healthcare and research and analytics firm, Open Desk, provide a real-world perspective as they elaborated on which individual personal characteristics, attitudes and skills they are looking for in applicants during the hiring process.
At the end of the workshop, students were invited to visit booths of 12 local businesses that were currently hiring. "We wanted to provide an immediate opportunity for participants to use what they had learned," states Corey Hutcherson, Chamber vice president for community relations and Foundation coordinator. "At the same time, we were able to offer a valuable service to those Chamber members who were looking for quality employees. It was a win-win situation all around."

Future Workforce development Initiatives We are working on new initiatives to expand our Workforce Development Scope. We will be working with a local company to launch a broadcast apprenticeship program with local high schools in the fall of 2018. Additionally we are working on some seminars for our chamber businesses and young professional group.
